Standard float glass carries a faint green cast that becomes obvious over white surfaces, subtly muddying the colour; low-iron glass is genuinely clear, so the surface beneath shows through exactly as intended. On darker timbers and bold colours, standard glass is usually indistinguishable and the more economical choice — we will point you to whichever is right for your piece.

For tops in everyday use we recommend toughened glass, which is toughened to BS EN 12150 — far stronger than ordinary glass and designed to break into small, blunt granules rather than dangerous shards.
